Holiday Entertaining

I like to ensure every detail when hosting a party at home.  I like to make my guests feel special.  I have hosted dinner parties with name cards for each of my guests.  I use table decor that is not too grandiose so that my guests can see each other from across the table and they are the center of attention at the table.

Flowers should be simple surprises that you stumble upon.  Arrangements do not need to be purchased and expensive.  A few elements from your yard are perfect such as branches and these can even be spray painted red, white or gold or any color choice.  Fruit from your yard (sliced or whole) such as oranges, lemons, accompanied with vibrant cranberries can fill vases.

I like to weave fabric and/or a simple organic garland around the platters of food on the buffet table and elevate my platters at various heights adding pine cones and mistle toe here and there for a special touch.  Fabric with a sheen or sheers are perfect this.

Appropriate illumination is very important.  Don't forget candles and votives where ever possible; small lamps in unexpected areas such as bathroom counters, kitchen and bartops.  Do not use overhead lighting unless it is a beautiful chandlier or pendent and illuminates in a warm manner and makes guests...well....look attractive.  Therefore, no overhead fluorescents is my preference. Illuminate with table lamps, small unexpected lamps, white or colored holidays lights on indoor and outdoor trees and plants.  I have often welcomed guests into my patio or garden in which case my trees and plants are adorned with holiday lights as well.

I always have music playing.  Depending on the crowd and the level of energy, my music choices vary from Chill Lounge or pop culture choices.

Give a Cosmopolitan Holiday Sparkle by dipping the edge of the glass in lime juice and coating the rim with sugar.  Then float a few cranberries on top.

Happy Holiday Entertaining.

The Secretary

The Secretary is a piece historically called escritoire that started as a writing surface in 17th century Europe.  It became popular in the 1800's and 1900's in England, France and the U.S. with a bookcase or cabinet on top.

The Secretary is one of my personal favorite pieces of furniture.  The writing surface folds up and conceals storage and the work area. It doubles as a bookcase and writing surface in compact areas and can be placed in living rooms, libraries or almost anywhere because it is simply a beautiful and historical piece.

I also love it for it's versatility in use.  In addition to using for its historical desk purposes consider using it in one of the following ways:
  •  In a dining or breakfast area as a buffet and china cabinet.  Use it for displaying desserts or beverages and the storage on top for china or treasured pieces and table linen in the drawers below.
  •  It can also be used as an accent piece in an entry of a home and doubles as a writing surface/mail station and/or storage for keys, etc.
  • In a bedroom or guest room as a bedside table.  Store books on top; store blankets and throws in the bottom drawers; leave it open and have a reading lamp on the writing surface; and of course doubles as a desk.
  • In a bedroom or vanity area as a vanity or dressing area.  Include a vanity mirror and lamp and you've got yourself a perfect vignette.
Consider adding an unexpected spin by putting a lamp on the surface, a vase with flowers, decorative bookends, the possibilities are almost endless.  Enjoy the images below:

Wallpaper

Wallpaper can make much more of a statement than paint alone. With so many beautiful choices, why not play up a dining room or powder with more personality.

Bold wallpaper works well in rooms not used to often such as powder rooms or guest quarters. Some choices are a large scale damask or metallic.

In rooms you spend more time in like a master bedroom, consider more understated choices. Consider metallic on a ceiling. The light is reflected and gives the room a beautiful glow.

Consider playing up your guest room and bath to welcome overnight holiday guests.  Contact me for a consultation.

San Diego Draperies

Add drama to a room by mounting draperies high up toward the ceiling. For the most part draperies should always be floor to ceiling length with the exception of those that are covering windows just above kitchen sinks, counters, tubs or any other built-in elements. Add some punch to the room with bold pillows.

"I live in a small house with my husband and two small children. As the years passed we would accumulate pieces of furniture. I felt like I was living in a yard sale. No pieces matched and however I arranged them the rooms still looked small. I asked Laure Zazueta Ferratt from FINO to come and help me with a new furniture layout so that so that it would look and feel more comfortable for us. After providing a new furniture layout and adding a few accents pieces, the room felt larger and much more comfortable. My husband could not believe the transformation. Friends and family have not stopped complimenting us on our “new” living room. I cannot wait to have Laura design our other rooms. "-Leah Albertson

Your Environment

When deciding on a fabric for a piece of furniture, think in terms of longevity of each piece and how often it will be used. In a family room look for durable fabrics in chenille and durable textures that can take the wear and tear of an active family. Bring in color through the use of bold pillows still being mindful of the wear and tear they will endure.

Here is a cozy little bathroom that reminds me of the one in our Swiss Hotel Room during our honeymoon stay.

When using fabric for seating in a bathroom use terrycloth. Terrycloth is also very suitable for poolside or spa seating.

Mixing Styles

"If my little girl's room is traditional, can I make my adjacent guest bedroom contemporary?"-Vanessa Lupercio

Absolutely. I encourage mixing styles for interest. They can be mixed but their must be one or two elements, for example color choices, that pull the look together.

For instance, you can add contemporary pieces to a traditional room by adding a contemporary lamp or pair of tailored looking chairs while making sure that the room is tied together with a coordinating color theme throughout.

Another hint, when I add contemporary pieces to a traditional room, I like to make sure that my contemporary choices are soft in appearance and not too stark like those out of a Scandinavian catalog. My goal would be to add soft-contemporary pieces to traditional spaces.

I will leave you with some images from my favorite eclectic designer, Candice Olsen.

Roger Thomas is Aces

Casino Resort Designer, Roger Thomas, responsible for the romanticism, theatrical, and breath-taking designs of the Bellagio, Wynn Resorts and Casino, The Mirage, and the newly opened Encore, will be receiving the Casino Design Lifetime Achievement Award at the Global Gaming Expo on November 16th in Las Vegas.

I attended a lecture by Mr. Thomas at the Las Vegas Design Market in September of 2008. It was an inspiring and memorable experience.

For those of you that think one has to be formally educated in the area of interior design to become a Design Icon, here are some news: Roger Thomas received a BFA in Art History. He started his career as a designer when he was an apprentice during his teen years.

Hats off to Roger Thomas for creating an exciting visual experience for tourists and gaming aficionados of his Casino Resorts.

The following images are from the Wynn Hotel.

Avant-garde

As I look around my neighborhood and surrounding areas I am always curious and intrigued by beauty and mystery combined. For those of you that are new to the the definition of "avant-garde" I will give a description. It is referred to people or works of art that are innovative or pushing the limits of what is the norm.

When I think about my interpretation of avant-garde, certain works come to mind that are both mysterious and yet beautiful. Some of which are so mysterious one might wonder how it is so that the piece can be beutiful at the same time.

Take for instance the Notre Dame de Paris. Notre Dame de Paris was one of the first Gothic cathedrals, and its construction established the Gothic period. The architect was really pushing the limits with the heights of its walls and the slenderness of the lines.

-Images of Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, France

Another one of my favorite examples of avant-garde is the works of Gaudi, a Spanish Catalan architect famous for his unique buildings. While on a trip to Spain I'd overheard one of my fellow tour travelers refer to his buildings as hideous. One might see it as hideous but his "hideous" architecture is one of the most well known in the world.

Barcelona, Spain

I welcome comments and sharing of works that you have come across that might be considered mysterious or odd but to you are simply beautiful.

Design for All

I had attended a lecture a month ago that focused on Universal Design. For those of you that do not know the concept of Universal Design, I will give a brief description. The purpose of Universal Design is for a product or design to be versatile and adaptable to a whole population, young or old, disabled or not and regardless of the life cycle. The aim of universal design is to provide both flexibility in use as well as aesthetically pleasing solutions that targets everyone no matter one's physical limitations.

You see, the Baby Boomer population is a huge market. A person turns 50 years of age every 7 seconds. This population is savy, healthier and more active than the previous generation. In addition, they are the wealthiest group among the total population. What that means for designers is that we need to focus more on creative solutions that are flexible in use for all ages but does not sacrifice style. The products we specify should minimize hazards, require little physical effort, and very importantly be stylish. What stylish Univeral products do is provide the safety ramification for an aging or disabled population without screaming, the "I'm different" stigma that we are all resistant to.

Take a look at the following Kohler tub. It is called the Parity Tub and was recently featured at the Kitchen and Bath Conference and Show. What looks like a stylish wooden reading shelf is actually a transfer seat making it easy for a user to get in and out of the tub. But you'd never know it. That's the beauty of it.

http://www.kohler.com

And just for fun take a look at this little number. Offered by TOTO USA and new to the market and also featured in the Kitchen and Bath Show. It is called the Neorest Luminist II Soaker Tub and it is lit up from underneath with LED lighting. They also feature a lavatory. Stunning I might say.

When You Add, You Take Away

I recently had an associate take a look a some pics of my spruced up 1950's home and tell me that considering it is a small space, it does not looked cramped. I've been asked how I manage to make a space feel cozy without making it look cluttered or over-furnished. At one point my husband and I lived in a one bedroom condo that totaled no more than 550 sqft living space. My real estate agent said, it is comfortable and furnished well but it doesn't look crowded. She asked, "How do you do it?" Here is a big hint, when you add something to a small space that is already fully furnished and accessorized, you take something away.

Here's a more specific idea, if you have a bookcase with a TV console and a chair all along one side of a furniture arrangement for example, you minimize the accessories on the bookcase and the surrounding area. Therefore you are left with functional furniture and hopefully with enough seating and end tables for a minimum of two guests, but without feeling cluttered. Maintaining a minimalistic approach in the accessory department and keeping the color palette to a minimum can add alot. One more hint for small spaces, plants and indoor trees tend to make a space feel less cluttered. I don't know why. They just do.

Below is an illustration of a small living room I staged with minimal accessories and a not-so-fussy color palette:

I will close with a fab looking drink:

White-Grape Spritzer

Mix equal parts white grape juice and lemon-lime soda; serve over ice with sliced fruit. Enjoy.

Ciao for now!
