Nooks and Niches

I am so drawn to secretary desks because of there historical appeal and character and very importantly the many ways you can use them.  In addition to desks they would work great as buffets or serving tables, bar cabinet and liquor serving tray, vanites, storage for items at an entry way...the possiblities go on.

Below is a secretary that was my old writing desk as a child.  I will be giving it a face lift with some paint and metallic glaze.

Wall Art

Hang a cluster of pieces making sure they are unifed
by at least one element.  In this bathroom the theme
of nude compositions unifies the overall look.

Add interest and a cozy appeal to a room by adding three dimensional interest to your walls and displaying treasured items. Hang shelving and accessories making sure to balance the overall look using various heights of accessories and adding a splash of color.  On this wall I added color with a floral.  My client loved the opportunity to express her love for decorative clocks and family photos.

My Sketches

Sketching helps me excercise my creativity whether it is mentally envisioning an object such as a light fixture or piece of furniture or creating a room or a focal point in a room.  It also aids in creating a library of ideas for clients and future projects.

I love sketching fireplaces.  I love the ambiance it provides a room and the dramatic effect an over-sized fireplace can provide.

I love architectural details and the texture that finishes can provide to add interest to a clean-lined space.

Laminate Flooring vs. Wood Flooring

With the right lamitnate flooring choice one can literaly capture the elegant and rich look of hardwood floors and natural stone, affordably. In addition to the aesthetically improved choices on the market now, lamite is extremely durable, almost more so than some natural woods, and may be an excellent choice for active families and high traffic areas.  A good soundproofing remedy for laminate is a cork underlayment.

Take a look at the following site for beautiful lamite surface choices.

Efficient and Attractive Kitchen Lighting Tips

Here's how you can have efficient lighting in your kitchen without sacrificing attractive illumination.  Illuminate underneath your upper cabinets for task lighting with Fluorescent Lighting. Consider LED lighting at the toekick of lower cabinetry for a stylish glow.  Use recessed incandescent lighting in the ceiling and put them on dimmers to adjust illumination for a beautiful ambience.

Budgeting for Style

As I walk through what is about to be my dear friend's new home, I take a look around and give her a quick furniture plan that I'd layed out in my head.  As she takes me through the kitchen and 2 1/2 bathrooms she discusses her budget and asks me for the wisest way to cut corners but yet add a punch with great style. She talked about the look she is trying to achieve and the "feel" she'd like her surfaces to portray.  I'd suggested the following:

When it comes to countertops and backsplashes, consider the beautiful choices that ceramic and porcelain now have to offer and add your punch with accent pieces of tile that can be used to create beautiful designs.  Their are glass and metal choices that are stunning and with a strategically designed decorative tile layout you can achieve a great look without blowing your budget.  In other words, spend your money on the accent pieces that will add the character to your home and let the backdrop such as the countertops and backsplash be a more cost effective choice.

With budget conscious clients I guide them toward focusing their money on the following which can add a great punch to an overall look:

  • Decorative Light Fixutres
  • Decorative framed mirrors in vanity areas and replacing faucets and hardware rather than the expense of replacing countertops and sink basins unless it is necessary
  • Decorative pillows on humdrum sofas and chairs
  • Beautiful lamps or replacing a lampshade with a beautiful option
